On July 4, 2025, the Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) hosted a meeting with the national Gender and Energy Technical Working Group (GE-TWG)—a collective initiative to ensure gender equality is meaningfully integrated into Ethiopia’s energy sector.
The event brought together key stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, the private sector, and development partners. During the discussion, it was acknowledged that while progress has been made, much remains to be done to bridge the gender gap in energy access, participation, and leadership.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Yewubdar Amino, Executive Officer of the Women and Social Affairs Unit at MoWE, emphasized the urgent need for a coordinated approach to support women, our sisters and mothers who remain underrepresented in the sector. She called on the GE-TWG to act as a strategic body to drive collaboration and accountability.
Ms. Amsalu Hunde, Gender Specialist at MoWE/ADELE, presented the draft Terms of Reference for the Working Group, which outlines plans to build women’s capacity, foster partnerships, and mainstream gender in energy strategies and policies. The document lays the foundation for joint action across institutions and sectors.
