
Unlocking Capital for Clean Energy: EWiEn Workshop on Alternative Financing
On April 12, 2025, the Ethiopian Women in Energy (EWiEn), in partnership with the Ethiopian-German Energy Cooperation, hosted a high-level workshop on Alternative Financing for Energy Projects in Ethiopia. Held at WeVenture in Addis Ababa, the event brought together 41 participants for a dynamic and solutions-focused discussion on unlocking investment for the country’s energy transition.

Moderated by EWiEn Vice President Atikilt Bekele, the workshop opened with remarks from Dr. Atsede Gualu, Chairperson of EWiEn. A keynote presentation was delivered by Dr. Helen Berga, Research Fellow at UNDP and Assistant Professor at Addis Ababa University’s Department of Economics.

Panelists explored the current landscape of climate finance in Ethiopia and shared practical insights on securing capital from institutional investors such as private equity funds. They also discussed emerging opportunities to raise financing through the Ethiopian Securities Exchange.
The workshop underscored the importance of adopting diverse financing mechanisms—such as public-private partnerships and green bonds—to attract investment in the energy sector. Participants emphasized the need for a robust policy framework, stronger government-private sector collaboration, and community engagement to build investor confidence and streamline project implementation.
Capacity building and stakeholder alignment were also highlighted as critical to accelerating sustainable energy development in Ethiopia.
